Perimenopause & Menopause

You don't have to simply put up with feeling exhausted, anxious or disconnected from yourself. Perimenopause is a normal transition, but symptoms don't have to impact your quality of life.

What is Perimenopause?

Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause and is often the stage when symptoms are most noticeable. It can begin several years before periods stop completely and may last anywhere from a few years to over a decade.

During this time, ovulation becomes less predictable and ovarian hormone production gradually changes.

Importantly, estrogen and progesterone do not decline at the same rate. Progesterone often declines earlier and more significantly, which may contribute to many of the symptoms women experience during this transition.

  • Perimenopause most commonly begins between 40-45 years old.

  • Menopause is diagnosed once 12 months have passed since your final menstrual period.

  • The average age of menopause in Australia is approximately 51 years.

Looking Beyond Hormones Alone

While changing hormone levels play a significant role, they are often only one piece of the puzzle. At Wellness Within Clinic, we take a broader approach to supporting women through perimenopause and beyond. Even women using Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) may benefit from addressing underlying factors that continue to influence long-term health and wellbeing.

Areas We'll Assess

Nervous System Regulation

As estrogen declines, some women become more sensitive to stress and changes in body temperature. Supporting the nervous system can help improve:

• Sleep

• Anxiety

• Hot flushes

• Stress resilience

• Energy

Metabolic and Cardiovascular Health

Hormonal changes during peri-menopause influence insulin sensitivity, body composition and cardiovascular health. We assess:

  • Blood sugar balance

  • Insulin resistance

  • Waist circumference

  • Blood Pressure

  • Lipids Profile

  • Dietary habits

  • Exercise routines

I focus on helping women maintain muscle mass, support metabolic health, reduce inflammation, preserve energy and age well, recognising that our bodies naturally change over time and that health can look different at different stages of life.

Bone and Muscle Health

Estrogen plays an important role in maintaining bone density and muscle mass. Supporting these areas can help reduce future risk of:

• Osteoporosis

• Fractures

• Frailty

• Loss of independence

Gut Health

Digestive symptoms and intestinal inflammation influence hormone metabolism, nutrient absorption and overall wellbeing. Areas investigated may include:

• Bloating

• Constipation

• Dysbiosis

• Nutrient absorption

• Inflammation

Thyroid Health

Symptoms of hypothyroidism can overlap significantly with perimenopause. We'll review your symptoms and full health history, and if needed, I will write you a referral letter to take to your GP get comprehensive thyroid testing done.

Supporting Healthy Ageing

Perimenopause is more than managing symptoms.

It is also an opportunity to build foundations for long-term wellbeing.

Treatment plans may focus on:

✓ Symptom relief

✓ Supporting sleep

✓ Improving energy

✓ Building muscle

✓ Maintaining bone density

✓ Supporting metabolic health

✓ Reducing inflammation

✓ Optimising nutrition

✓ Improving stress resilience

✓ Promoting healthy ageing

Frequently Asked Questions

Is perimenopause just something I have to put up with?

No - while hormonal changes are a normal part of ageing, many women find they feel significantly better with targeted dietary, lifestyle, nutritional and herbal support.

I'm already taking HRT. Can I still work with you?

Absolutely. My role is to complement your existing medical care by supporting nutrition, metabolic health, stress resilience, gut health, cardiovascular health, muscle and bone health.

Is weight gain inevitable during perimenopause?

Hormonal changes can influence body composition and insulin sensitivity, however maintaining muscle mass, supporting blood sugar regulation, managing stress and optimising nutrition can help support healthy body composition and improve cardiovascular health during this stage of life.

Is it too early to seek support if I'm only in my early 40s?

Not at all. Many women begin noticing changes in their late 30s or early 40s. Seeking support early may provide an opportunity to better understand your body, reduce symptoms and establish habits that support healthy ageing.
