Why You're Still Bloated (Even If You've Removed Dairy, Gluten and Half Your Diet)

Why you're still bloated, Perth Naturopath Alkimos

Bloating is one of the most misunderstood digestive symptoms I see in clinic.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that bloating is always caused by the food you're eating. As a result, people start removing more and more foods from their diet, hoping they'll eventually find the 'problem food'.

But in many cases, food isn't actually the root cause... It's simply exposing a gut that isn't functioning optimally.

The biggest mistakes I see people making:

  • Removing more and more foods until their diet becomes incredibly restrictive, without addressing why those foods are causing symptoms in the first place.

  • Repeatedly using antimicrobials or antibiotics without rebuilding the gut ecosystem or addressing the underlying drivers of imbalance, such as digestive secretions, gut lining integrity, inflammation, immune function, stress or the gut-brain axis.

  • Focusing only on the gut itself, while overlooking the 'top-down' approach. Digestion starts long before food reaches the intestines, with our thoughts, nervous system, chewing, stomach acid and digestive secretions all playing important roles.

The most common causes of bloating I see in clinic

While everyone is different, these are some of the most common underlying contributors I see:

  • Microbiome dysbiosis - an imbalance of beneficial and less beneficial microbes, or a microbiome with low bacterial diversity.

  • SIBO - an overgrowth of bacteria or archaea within the small intestine.

  • Stress - whether mental, emotional or physical, stress has a profound impact on digestive function.

Think of your gut like a garden

I often explain the gut microbiome to my clients using a garden analogy. Imagine walking into your garden and pulling out every weed. If you don't replace those weeds with healthy plants, improve the soil, provide enough water and sunlight, and create the right conditions for growth, what happens? The weeds simply come back.

Our gut works in a very similar way.

The goal isn't simply to nuke the bad bugs. It's to create an environment where beneficial microbes can thrive and the overall ecosystem becomes more balanced and resilient.

We support this by improving gut lining integrity, reducing inflammation, supporting digestive secretions and gut motility, regulating the immune system within the gut, reducing stress, and nourishing the microbiome with the right foods and lifestyle habits.

One of the biggest things I see getting missed / Why You're Still Bloated

A low-diversity microbiome is an incredibly common cause of bloating. When your gut contains fewer beneficial species, it often loses the capacity to comfortably digest a wide variety of foods. This is where I think many people unintentionally make things worse.

People keep killing... killing... killing.

Another antimicrobial.

Another supplement.

Another elimination diet.

Over time, this can further reduce microbial diversity, making the gut less resilient and decreasing tolerance to different food groups.

Another restrictive diet probably isn't the answer

I've had clients come to me who have removed food after food until they're eating only ten safe foods. And they're still bloated. Rather than chasing every new diet or supplement trend promising a quick fix, I encourage my clients to build a diverse wholefood diet that suits their individual tolerance, culture and lifestyle.

Every gut is unique, and your diet should be too!

Healing takes time

I also like to be honest about timeframes. Rebuilding a gut that's resilient enough to enjoy a wide variety of foods again takes time, especially if there has been many years of restriction, high stress and antibiotics/antimicrobials.

While many people notice meaningful improvements within the first couple of months by implementing the right nutrition and lifestyle strategies, rebuilding gut health is often a journey of 6-12 months rather than a few weeks. There are no shortcuts when it comes to creating lasting change.

My approach

When someone comes to see me with bloating, we start with the foundations - together, we build a nutrition and lifestyle plan that supports your unique gut, addresses the top-down influences on digestion, improves gut motility and creates the right environment for healing.

If symptoms persist or there's evidence of a more complex underlying issue, we can then use functional microbiome testing to investigate further and develop a personalised treatment plan.

My goal isn't simply to reduce bloating for a few weeks. It's to help you build a healthier, more resilient gut for the long term.
