If you’re constantly bloated or feeling like your digestion just isn’t right - you’re not alone. Bloating and IBS-like symptoms can be triggered by many underlying causes including nutrient deficiencies, blood sugar dysregulation, and hormone imbalances. Blood tests can give us major clues about what’s going on.
Here are 5 blood tests I recommend checking if you're struggling with bloating and gut issues:
Vitamin D ~ possesses anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating effects in the gut. Vitamin D helps to regulates the gut microbiome and even has antibacterial effects. How do we get enough Vitamin D? By getting adequate sun exposure (be sun smart and avoid peak UV!) and by working on our liver health.
Zinc ~ zinc is anti-inflammatory and deficiency weakens the gut lining and can lead to leaky gut. When this happens it allows harmful bacteria and toxins to pass through the barrier which triggers an ongoing immune response and inflammation, which can contribute to digestive issues and food sensitivities.
Fasting Glucose & Fasting Insulin ~ Blood sugar imbalances can directly impact digestion, increasing bloating, gut inflammation and even causing gut motility issues. High insulin levels can also be a sneaky driver of hormone imbalances which can contribute to bloating.
Iron & B12 ~ Both are needed to produce digestive secretions such as stomach acid and digestive enzymes. Poor gut health can actually reduce absorption of these key nutrients, so it’s a vicious cycle!
Thyroid Panel ~ Your thyroid controls digestion, metabolism, and gut motility. If it’s underactive (hypothyroid), you might experience symptoms from slow gut motility, such as bloating, constipation, and sluggish digestion. If it’s overactive (hyperthyroid), it can cause diarrhea and gut irritation. A full thyroid panel (not just TSH!) is key for getting the full picture.
If any of these markers are out of range, it could be a missing piece in your gut health puzzle! Want to dive deeper into how to heal your gut naturally? Reply to this email or book a consult online - I’d love to support you on your journey
